What is a Constellation?

A Constellation is a 3D representation of any system to which we belong. The most influential system to which we belong is our Family System (Family of Origin). Through life we become members of many other systems. Eg: Current Family (wife and children), friendship system, work system, sports system, political system, school system and we also belong to our body system. All of these systems can be looked at using the method of Constellations Work.

A constellation is done using representatives (participants) in a workshop. The Constellator (Client) selects people out of the group of participants to represent important family members or elements related to their issue and places them in a spatial relationship to each other in the work space. Once all the representatives have been placed intuitively in their position the client sits down and observes the process. The Constellator will observe, for the most part, from outside the constellation field or work space.

We look at an issue objectively through representatives to gain a deeper insight into  what is really happening in the clients situation. The representatives are asked to tune into their bodies and become aware of any sensations or emotions that are present while they are standing in their positions. The representatives intuitively, with focused attention give feedback to the facilitator about what is happening in their bodies. at this moment. This is a phenomenological experience that happens spontaneously when the representatives focus their attention on the present moment experience.

The feedback and movements from the representatives and the facilitators interventions will guide the movements of the constellation from the original stressful state into a more relaxed state where the representatives feel comfortable and at ease.

Family Constellations, Workshops, Hellinger, South Africa, Cape Town

“The constellation comes to rest when the members of the clients family have moved from their fateful dynamics to find their way to each other with love and respect, when excluded family members have been re-integrated and when each member of the family has found an appropriate place” (Schneider 2007).

A constellation allows us to look at the issues without members of your family, work colleagues and personal relationships being present. It is a process in which we don't need to know much about the history of the issue, just a few factual details. The resolution that is achieved through the constellation often filters through to the people concerned without them having been present at the workshop. As a result of resolving an issue, other dynamics may surface in which case a further constellation may be appropriate. Most people require one constellation to clear an issue.

Impressions

Constellations basically look at two questions. Firstly, what entangles one family member in the fate of another and what might resolve this entanglment? Secondly, what is needed to support a free flow of love? These basic questions unfold in a multitude of different ways in constellations work. - J Schneider 2007 (ISCA Faculty Member)
